The first printed documents with a date were from 1454, even though Gutenberg's first printer was ready circa 1440 and some prototypes perhaps before then. :)

They were first assembled in Germany by the goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg around 1440, based on existing screw-presses used to press cloth, grapes, etc. and possibly prints. Gutenberg was the first in Western Europe to develop a printing press.

Everyone believe the very first printing press, a machine which provided a method of moveable type (sounds familiar?;D) was invented in Germany by Johann Gutenberg in 1439. His new machine could save a lot of time to create a printed book.

And then William Caxton brought the press to England in 1476, enabling the Elizabethan golden age of literature.

Probably he teamed up early with Andreas Dritzehan and Andreas Heilmann circa 1436 to start building a press from the already-completed designs, or to start designing one.

Ok, so the first time in history when printing processes began was in the year 888 with a Buddhist scripture known as "The Diamond Sutra," first known example of block printing. In 1400 I think, moveable clay type came from China leading to 1423 when Europe began using wood engraving to produce books. Now finally comes the most well known dude, Johannes Gutenberg, in 1436 to put things together and start building the printing press.
